A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
