Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Police then found many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police report initial examinations show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; investigators are presently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the case" and have requested to the residents for details.
An important political figure said the incident made him without words and required to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack in 2020," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
