Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
