Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
