Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
