'Treat game'

The legal representative, prosecuting, detailed the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.

She explained his those affected were disadvantaged youngsters who were attending a summer camp which he managed.

Ruben conducted a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel stated, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had engaged in this activity with the children "repeatedly", and children had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She said the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had worries in summer 2025.

The prosecutor added: "This year his stepson had concerns about the situation, justifiably.

"They chose" to have a look in the man's possessions."

Mrs Prior KC stated materials including lubricant, ointment and syringes were found, and his family member contacted the police about his concerns.

She explained the man proceeded to engage in the "sweet game" with six children that night - that Saturday - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she added.

The oversight body, the investigative body, had stated that it was investigating the police response of the situation.

Mrs Prior stated the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson called the police a second time.

She stated Ruben then played the "candy game" in a space of five youngsters.
